Long considered to be one of the most versatile remedies for countless ailments, CBD is today one of the fastest growing medical treatment options in the U.S. – and for good reason.
What is CBD?
CBD, which is short for “cannabidiol,” is a common chemical compound found in a class called “cannabinoids” that naturally occurs in cannabis plants. Both hemp and marijuana plants fall into the cannabis family, but CBD is extracted almost exclusively from hemp plants.
Discovered in 1940, CBD is extremely effective for a number of medical issues and can be used in a variety of forms, including oil, butter, lotions, capsules, inhalation of smoke or vapor, aerosol spray, edibles and more.
Does CBD get you high like marijuana?
The short answer to this question is no, but there is more to the story: Compared to hemp, marijuana plants contain a higher level of THC, which is the psychoactive drug that gets you “high.” People grow hemp plants for their seeds and stalk, which are used for textiles, clothes, food and other products. To be considered as hemp, a plant must contain less than .3% of THC.
So, although CBD and THC both come from the cannabis plant, the miniscule amount of THC contained in CBD is not enough to get one high. However, like most medicines, CBD will have a different effect on everyone. Research shows minimal side effects, though some users have reported drowsiness and/or a slightly upset stomach. But for most people, there are no side effects whatsoever.
